O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? This Romeo & Juliet treat was first introduced to me by my nearest and dearest Brazilian friend. It’s one of her favourite snacks and has become one of mine. I suspect that once you try this sweet and salty treat, that you too will be singing its praises!
I’d like to think that it’s named after Shakespeare's famous star crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, simply because this dish pairs fruit and cheese, a match made in heaven. Guava or Goiabada paste is cut into little cubes and added to cocktail skewers alongside soft cheese, such as Minas cheese. Minas cheese or Queijo Minas is tough to source here in Canada, so I like substituting it with Queso Fresco cheese. This cow’s milk cheese is similar in flavour and texture to its counterpart, but slightly saltier and I think that it is a great counterpoint to the sweet and jammy guava. These star crossed lovers combine to create a sweet, creamy, savoury and salty delight!
My Brazilian Romeo & Juliet recipe comes together in 5 minutes and couldn’t be easier to make. The stars definitely aligned with this one! All you need is 2 ingredients and some cocktail skewers and you’ve got yourself a satisfying bite! Enjoy it as a snack, appetizer or dessert. It’s perfect anytime and for any occasion! So, let me show you how it’s done. Grab a spoon and come and cook with me!
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 0 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Serves: 4 - 8
Ingredients:
250g Guava or Goiabada Paste (See Notes below)
170g Queso Fresco cheese
Instructions:
Set aside 8 cocktail skewers, measuring 4.3 inches or 11cm in length.
Using a sharp knife, cut the guava paste and Queso Fresco into 1/2 inch cubes.
To the skewer, add a cube of guava paste, followed by a cube of Queso Fresco, another cube of guava, and topping it off with a final cube of Queso Fresco. Repeat this process for the remaining skewers.
Transfer them to a serving platter or plate and serve and enjoy!
Notes:
What if I Don’t Have Cocktail Skewers Handy: If you don’t have cocktail skewers handy, you can simply use standard toothpicks. Given their shorter stature, you will end up with 16 treats, comprised of 1 cube of guava paste and 1 cube of Queso Fresco.
