Are you looking for a simple and sinful treat that doesn’t require much time or effort? If you answered yes to that question, then look no further! I present to you - an Affogato!
I had my first Affogato, a few years back, while on a trip to Italy. I have to say that it was hands down - PHENOMENAL! This Italian coffee dessert (or beverage) is made using just 2 ingredients - espresso and vanilla gelato or ice cream. Talk about a match made in heaven! As the name suggests, the gelato is drowned in freshly brewed hot espresso. The temperature differential causes the gelato to melt ever so slightly and the two ingredients combine to create a symphony of flavours in your mouth.
This little masterpiece is decadent and complex in flavour but really couldn’t be simpler to make. Once you learn how to make one, I suspect that you’ll be making it quite often. So, let me show you how it’s done. Grab a spoon and come and cook with me!
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 0 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Serves: 1
Ingredients:
1 scoop vanilla gelato or ice cream
1 shot freshly brewed hot espresso (1 oz) (See Notes below)
Instructions:
Add 1 scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream to a shallow coffee cup or small (heat-safe) dessert bowl.
Using an espresso machine, brew a single shot of espresso.
Pour the espresso directly over the gelato or ice cream. Grab a spoon and serve immediately. Enjoy!
Notes:
I Don’t Have An Espresso Machine At Home, What Should I Do?!: A Moka Pot will produce strong coffee and yield espresso-like results. However, you can simply substitute the espresso in this recipe with a strong hot brewed coffee on a 1:1 basis.
Make It An Extra Special Treat: Follow the instructions above and pour 1 Tbsp of Baileys Irish Cream, Kalhua, Amaretto or Frangelico over top. Serve and enjoy!
