I love cranberry sauce so much so that I’ve been guilty of eating it by the spoonful. It’s become one of my favourite sauces and is so delicious and incredibly easy to make! I simply can’t get enough! My Homemade Cranberry Sauce is tart, bright, sweet and aromatic and will give your standard canned cranberry sauce a run for its money!
This cranberry sauce is made using both fresh and dried cranberries. Fresh cranberries are rather tart, but, dried cranberries are sweeter and give this sauce some extra sweetness and texture. Orange juice and zest, cinnamon and nutmeg are added to the pot, and intensify the cranberry flavour while adding a layer of brightness, warmth and some festive flair. The ingredients combine to create one of the most satisfying spoonfuls!
My Homemade Cranberry Sauce is so versatile - the possibilities are endless! Serve it with your favourite protein, such as turkey, duck, ham or lamb. It pairs beautifully with my Perfectly Roasted Turkey and Apricot Glazed Ham. Or, use it as a topping for appetizers or as a spread in sandwiches, such as turkey or grilled cheese. So, why buy store-bought when you can make your own at home?! Let me show you how it’s done. Grab a spoon and come and cook with me! Happy holidays!
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
Serves: 8 - 12
Ingredients:
1 (340g) package of fresh cranberries, washed
3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (See Notes below)
1/2 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup water
Zest of 1 orange
1/4 tsp cinnamon
Pinch of nutmeg
Instructions:
Place all the ingredients into a medium saucepan. Set the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer.
Then, reduce the heat to low and cook for an additional 8 minutes or until the cranberries have softened.
Remove the saucepan from the heat and set aside to cool.
Once cool, transfer the cranberry sauce to a serving bowl and serve and enjoy!
Notes:
Freshly Squeezed: I love using freshly squeezed orange juice in this recipe. But, if you don’t have any oranges handy, you can simply substitute it with store-bought orange juice. Just be sure to use 100% pure orange juice. Some brands contain added sugars and using them in this recipe will result in an overly sweet sauce.
Make Ahead: This cranberry sauce can be made a day in advance. Simply let the cranberry sauce cool before transferring it to an airtight container. Then, store the sauce in the refrigerator until ready for use.
