French Onion Dip … All that and a bag of chips ✨🍟 When one dip just won’t do! Looking for an easy holiday or Thanksgiving appetizer or a game day snack? Look no further than my Homemade French Onion Dip recipe! It’s creamy, rich, savoury, sweet, tangy and delicious beyond belief!
My Homemade French Onion Dip recipe starts with onions, two to be exact! The chopped onions are tossed into a hot saucepan, sautéed in butter and cooked until softened and perfectly caramelized. The caramelization process brings out the inherent sweetness of the onions and results in the most beautiful golden-brown hue. The caramelized onions are cooled and added to an extra-creamy and rich dip base, comprised of sour cream and mayonnaise. The dip is flavoured with tamari, which adds tons of umami flavour and keeps this dish gluten-free. A sprinkling of fresh chives is added to the mix to amp-up and reinforce that quintessential onion flavour. All the ingredients combine to create a dip that will keep you dipping!
This delicious snack is best served alongside a bowl of your favourite chips or crackers. You really can’t go wrong! My Homemade French Onion Dip recipe comes together in just 30 minutes, uses a handful of simple ingredients and couldn’t be easier to make. So, let me show you how it’s done. Grab a spoon and come and cook with me!

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Serves: 6 - 8
Ingredients:
2 large white onions, peeled and chopped
3 Tbsp unsalted butter
1 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp honey
3/4 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 2/3 cups sour cream 14%
3 Tbsp mayonnaise
3/4 tsp tamari (See Notes below)
3 Tbsp fresh chives, finely chopped
1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper
1/2 Tbsp water, as needed (See Notes below)
Instructions:
To a large saucepan set over medium heat, add the butter. Once hot, toss in the onions and salt and cook for 15 minutes, stirring throughout. Then, reduce the heat to medium-low and add the honey, onion powder and garlic powder. Mix and cook for another 10 minutes (stirring every few minutes) or until the onions have caramelized or turned golden-brown in colour.
Once cooked, transfer the onions to a medium bowl and set them aside to cool.
To a medium bowl, add the sour cream, mayonnaise, tamari, chives and freshly ground pepper and mix until combined. Then, fold in the caramelized onions.
Enjoy as is or refrigerate until ready to be served.
Notes:
How to Prevent Over Browning of the Onions: If the onions are over browning during the caramelization process, simply add 1/2 Tbsp of cold water, in teaspoon increments, to the saucepan. The water will halt the browning process temporarily and will help remove any brown bits from the base of the pan. These caramelized bits will get reincorporated into the onions, adding incremental flavour and colour to this dish.
Tamari: I love using Tamari as it adds a meaty, savoury and salty flavour profile to this dish. To keep this dish gluten-free, be sure to check the ingredients label and use a gluten-free tamari option. Many varieties are gluten-free but some are not, as they contain small amounts of wheat.
Substituting Tamari: If you don’t have tamari on hand, you can simply substitute it with Worcestershire sauce on a 1:1 basis. Be mindful that Worcestershire sauces come in both gluten and gluten-free varieties.
