Homemade Hummus

Updated: Nov 6, 2023

As far as easy and flavourful appetizers go, my Homemade Hummus recipe is where it’s at! This creamy, smooth, luscious, delicious and satisfying dip or spread is made using the simplest of ingredients - chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic and spices. Canned chickpeas play a starring role and offer a time saving option, when making your own hummus at home. Tahini, a toasted sesame-based paste, lemon juice and olive oil add savoury, bright and rich notes to this creamy dip or spread. The garlic, cumin and smoked paprika impart tons of flavour and give it a smokey profile.

Given the complexity of flavour of this dish, you’d be surprised to know that it is incredibly easy and quick to make - all you need is a food processor and 5 minutes of time. This spread is so flavourful and versatile and can be:

  • Enjoyed in its simplest form with pitas, naan, crackers or a slice of crusty bread

  • Added to your crudité or mezze platter

  • Served alongside Souvlaki or your favourite protein, including chicken, lamb, pork and steak

  • Slathered on a pita for a souvlaki or falafel sandwich

  • Layered over roasted vegetables

  • Used as a condiment and added to your favourite sandwiches, like my Ultimate Halloumi Sandwich

Indulge yourself or make it as an appetizer for your next dinner party or social gathering.

Why buy store-bought hummus when you can make your own at home with a handful of ingredients and just a few minutes of your time. So, what are you waiting for?! Grab a spoon and come and cook with me! Enjoy!

Cook Time: 0 minutes

Total Time: 5 minutes

Serves: 6 - 8

Ingredients:

  • 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas or garbanzo beans

  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice

  • 3 Tbsp olive oil

  • 2 Tbsp tahini

  • 2 Tbsp water

  • 2 cloves of garlic

  • 1/2 tsp coarse salt

  • 1/4 tsp cumin

  • Drizzle of olive oil, as a topping

  • Sprinkling of smoked paprika and finely chopped parsley, as a topping

  • Reserved chickpeas, as garnish

Instructions:

  1. Drain and rinse a can of chickpeas, reserving a few chickpeas to be used as garnish.

  2. To a food processor, add the chickpeas, lemon juice, olive oil, tahini, water, garlic, salt and cumin and puree for 30 seconds or until silky and smooth.

  3. Transfer the hummus to a bowl. Using the back of your spoon, create a circular swirl in the hummus. Drizzle olive oil into the crevices and top it with a sprinkling of smoked paprika and parsley.
