Updated: Nov 6, 2023

The SECRET’S out! This cheeseburger is absolutely delicious and so juicy and mouthwatering that it will have you looking for a napkin and rolling up your sleeves!

If that wasn’t enticing enough, it’s wrapped up in its very own cheese blanket and is topped off with the piece de resistance - a tangy, creamy, crunchy, salty and sweet burger sauce, that offers a subtle kick. Leaf lettuce, sliced tomatoes, red onions and dill pickles are all great add-ons! Serve it with a side of fries, my Salt & Vinegar Smashed Potatoes or a side salad! Enjoy!

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 25 minutes

Serves: 4

Ingredients:

Cheeseburger Patty

  • 1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef

  • 1/2 medium white onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced

  • 1/4 cup parsley, finely chopped

  • 1 Tbsp tomato paste

  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce (See Notes below)

  • 2 tsp Dijon mustard

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tsp kosher salt

  • 1/2 tsp ground pepper

  • 1 1/2 Tbsp olive oil, divided

  • 4 slices cheddar cheese

  • 4 hamburger buns

  • Leaf lettuce, sliced tomatoes, red onions and dill pickle, my SECRET Burger Sauce or your go-to condiments, as toppings.

Instructions:

  1. To Make the Cheeseburger: Before you start prepping the ingredients for this dish, take the ground beef out of the refrigerator and let it sit out at room temperature for 30 minutes.

  2. To a large mixing bowl, add the beef, onion, garlic, parsley, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic and onion powder and egg. Using your hands, mix the ingredients until just combined. You don’t want to overwork the meat, otherwise, you will end up with a tough patty.

  3. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions. Shape the patties by flattening them slightly and adding a little indent to the centre of each patty.

  4. Season the prepared patties liberally with salt and pepper.

  5. In a large skillet, heat 1 1/2 Tbsp of olive oil over medium heat. Once the skillet is hot, add the patties and cook for 10 minutes, flipping them halfway through. Turn off the heat and transfer the patties to a plate or baking dish. Top with cheddar cheese and let the patties rest for 10 minutes. Serve and enjoy!

  6. Building your Cheeseburger: Build-a-burger and make it your own by adding your favourite condiments and toppings. Leaf lettuce, sliced tomatoes, red onions and dill pickle, mustard, ketchup and mayo are all tasty options. But, if you’re looking for a sauce that will take your cheeseburger to the next level, then try my SECRET Burger Sauce. It’s tangy, creamy, crunchy, salty and sweet, full of umami flavour and packs a powerful punch.

My SECRET Burger Sauce

  • 1/4 mayonnaise

  • 1 Tbsp ketchup

  • 1/2 Tbsp Dijon mustard

  • 2 tsp red wine vinegar

  • 1/2 tsp paprika

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 small shallot, finely chopped

  • 3 Tbsp dill pickle, finely chopped (approx. 1 medium pickle)

  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt

  • 1/4 tsp ground pepper

Instructions:

  1. To Make the SECRET Sauce: In a small bowl, mix all the ingredients until combined.

  2. Transfer the bowl to the refrigerator for at least 20 minutes to let the flavours meld.

Notes:

  1. To Make the Cheeseburger Gluten-Free: Substitute the Worcestershire sauce with gluten-free tamari soy sauce.

  2. Stovetop Cook Time: A 10 minute cook time yields patties that are well done in nature.

  3. Shaping the Burger Patties: To shape the burger patty, flatten it slightly, and then, using your fingers, gently create an indentation in the middle of the patty. This will allow your burger to keep its shape during the cooking process and prevent it from shrinking and puffing up.

  4. Season with Salt and Pepper: Adding salt to your patty mixture will draw out excess moisture from the beef and toughen the burger patty. Liberally season the exterior of the already formed patties with salt and pepper and then transfer them to the skillet for cooking.
